Georgia vs. S. Carolina highlights college football weekend
The SEC meeting between the Bulldogs and Gamecocks Saturday is the only game featuring a pair of teams from the Associated Press Top 25 rankings.
South Carolina has already seen one Southeastern Conference school, No. 7 Texas A&M, come barreling through Columbia in league play. Now, the 24th-ranked Gamecocks will see first-hand how the No. 6 University of Georgia football team rates on Saturday.
The Bulldogs feature running back Todd Gurley, who ran for 198 yards in a win over Clemson two weeks ago, and rushed for over 2,200 yards in the last two seasons.
The Gamecocks are 1-1 after beating East Carolina last Saturday. Senior Dylan Thompson has stepped into the starting quarterback role for head coach Steve Spurrier's offense, replacing the departed Connor Shaw.
The Georgia-South Carolina game kicks off at 3:30 p.m. Eastern time Saturday and can be seen on CBS.
Another interesting mid-afternoon game Saturday features a pair of former rivals from the old Southwest Conference. Arkansas travels to Lubbock, Texas, to take on Texas Tech.
The Red Raiders are led by former quarterback and now head coach Kliff Kingsbury, who has tried to maintain former coach Mike Leach's high-octane offense. Texas Tech has scored 70 points in compiling a 2-0 record so far. Sophomore Davis Webb is the latest in a line of Tech quarterbacks who will throw the football a lot.
The Razorbacks, under second-year head coach Bret Bielema, are 1-1 coming into Saturday's game. They lost to fifth-ranked Auburn in the season's first weekend, then put 73 points on the board against Nicholls State last Saturday. Which Arkansas team will we see this week?
Arkansas-Texas Tech will be televised by ABC at 3:30 p.m. Eastern.
Looking at the evening games, No. 4 Oklahoma welcomes Tennessee to Norman. These two schools have been playing football for over a century and met in the 1939 Orange Bowl. But this is the first time the Sooners and Volunteers have met since Lyndon Johnson sat in the White House, back in 1968.
The Volunteers are also 2-0 following wins over Utah State and Arkansas State. Senior quarterback Justin Worley has completed nearly 65 percent of his passes.
ABC is televising the Oklahoma-Tennessee game, beginning at 8 p.m. Eastern.
No. 12 UCLA hits the road again this week, traveling to Arlington, Texas to play the University of Texas at Cowboys Stadium. Before the season started, this contest looked to be a good game between teams from two of the power conferences (Atlantic Coast, Big Ten, Big 12, Southeastern, and Pacific 12). That was before Longhorn quarterback David Ash and wide receiver Jaxon Shipley suffered injures and other problems cropped up for new Texas head coach Charlie Strong. UT is 1-1, while the Bruins are 2-0 but some observers say UCLA has looked shaky at times.
Bruins quarterback Brett Hundley has popped up on some preseason Heisman Trophy candidate lists. UCLA has beaten Virginia on the road and Memphis at home. Texas was humbled at home by No. 25 BYU last weekend after beating North Texas back on Aug. 30.
UCLA-Texas will be broadcast on Fox at 8 p.m. Eastern Saturday.
