3. 'The Gift of the Magi,' by O. Henry

Retold many times in other books, movies, and TV shows, Henry's short story, published in 1906 as part of his second short story collection, tells the story of a married couple, Della and Jim, who each give up a favorite possession in order to buy something special for the other. With money being tight, Della cuts her hair and sells it to be able to afford a handsome chain for Jim's watch; he sells the watch to buy combs for her to wear in her beautiful hair.
