What is Eid al-Fitr?

Traditional Eid food

While the exact type of sweet varies, desserts are most ubiquitous during Eid. Among the most common in the Arab world are kaak – cookies filled with nuts and covered in powdered sugar. Other traditional sweets include baklava and dates, although every country has its own traditional Eid food that reflect the country’s culture. In Southeast Asia, one of the most popular servings is a dish of sweet vermicelli noodles served with milk and dried fruit.

The Daily Star in Lebanon reports that one sweet shop in Beirut estimated that it sells five times more sweets than average during Eid. One woman said she had ordered 6 kilograms (more than 13 pounds) of baklava and 4 kg (almost 9 lbs.) of chocolate to give to friends and family.
