4. Sarah Palin provides a 'teachable moment'
Sarah Palin's wordsmithing continued to delight the media, even after the midterm elections, when she congratulated America on its toppling of the Democratic congress via Twitter: "As always, proud to be American! Thanks, Commonsense Constitutional Conservatives, u didn’t sit down & shut up . . . u ‘refudiated’ extreme left.”
That, along with her first use of the word this summer in a tweet related to the Islamic center being built near Ground Zero, launched the word to the No. 4 spot in 2010.
Perhaps this will be a "teachable moment" on grammar for Palin? There must have been several such moments for the world in 2010, because "teachable moment" was the No. 4 phrase this year.
