The damage from this year's floods in Thailand pales beside the destruction wrought by the five deadliest floods in history. Where and when did they happen, and just how deadly were they?

1. Yellow River, 1931

In August 1931, the Yellow River burst its banks and flooded 42,000 square miles of land, leaving 80 million people homeless. Estimates of those who died in the flood or were killed by ensuing famine and disease run from 850,000 to four million, making it the worst natural disaster in recorded history.
