Our name is about honesty. The Monitor is owned by The Christian Science Church, and we’ve always been transparent about that.

The Church publishes the Monitor because it sees good journalism as vital to progress in the world. Since 1908, we’ve aimed “to injure no man, but to bless all mankind,” as our founder, Mary Baker Eddy, put it.

Gandhi never received the Nobel Peace Prize, although he was nominated for it five times between 1937 and 1948. In 1948, the year he was assassinated, the Nobel Committee issued no award stating "there was no suitable living candidate." In 1989, when the Dalai Lama was awarded the prize, the chairman of the committee said that it was "in part a tribute to the memory of Mahatma Gandhi".
