Remember Chubby's greatest hit? Billboard magazine does

This year, Billboard magazine, which covers music industry news, is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its famous Hot 100 chart, which ranks songs based on sales and on how well they do in radio airplay. Not long ago, the magazine came out with its list of all-time Hot 100 recordings. And, perhaps to the surprise of some rock 'n' roll fans, Chubby Checker's "The Twist" emerged as No. 1. Born Ernest Evans, the entertainer and onetime produce market worker changed his name in an apparent takeoff on that of pop music icon Fats Domino. His own career took off in 1960 when "The Twist" sealed his reputation as the king of the dance craze. Forty-eight years later, it remains his greatest hit, and he occasionally still performs it. The most popular songs of the Hot 100's five decades, and the artists or groups who performed them:

  • 1. "The Twist" Chubby Checker
  • 2. "Smooth" Santana
  • 3. "Mack the Knife" Bobby Darin
  • 4. "How Do I Live" Leann Rimes
  • 5. "The Macarena" Los Del Rio
