Like James J. Corbett before him, Gene Tunney was a educated man who studied the science of boxing. He defeated Jack Dempsey for the heavyweight championship in 1926 and successfully defended his title versus Dempsey the next year in the famous 'Long Count' fight. He retired after one final bout with a record of 61 wins in 83 fights.
