Oscar nominations 2012: the Academy's picks for best films

The Oscar nominations are announced, with a few surprises.

-

Actor Max von Sydow in 'Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close'

By François Duhamel/HONS/Warner Bros. Pictures/AP

2. Actor in a Supporting Role

Kenneth Branagh, "My Week With Marilyn"

Jonah Hill, "Moneyball"

Nick Nolte, "Warrior"

Christopher Plummer, "Beginners"

Max von Sydow, "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close"

Upsets: While the Branagh, Hill, and Plummer nominations were much as expected, "Extremely Loud" nominee Max von Sydow had received none of the usual forerunners to an Oscar nomination like a Screen Actors Guild or Golden Globe nomination. The last slot was the one that was up for contention, with some wondering if actor Armie Hammer would sneak in for "J. Edgar" or Albert Brooks for "Drive."
