World Two Palestinian nuns become saints

Mariam Bawardy, who founded a West Bank monastery, and Marie Alphonsine Ghattas, a female-literacy activist from Jersualem, were among four 19th-century women canonized Sunday, as an encouragement to Middle Eastern Christians.


Pope Francis canonized two nuns from what was 19th-century Palestine on Sunday in hope of encouraging Christians across the Middle East who are facing a wave of persecution from Islamic extremists.
