X-Men: Destiny, what we know so far

So far, this latest superhero video game is keeping to the shadows. We know its name, X-Men: Destiny. We know the team behind it, developer Silicon Knights (who last made the tepid Too Human for Xbox 360) and mega-publisher Activision (the company behind Call of Duty and Guitar Hero). Other than that, everything is pretty vague.

Even X-Men: Destiny's teaser trailer, embedded below, has a silhouette style that further obscures any concrete facts about the game, although we did spot Wolverine and Cyclops.

Early publicity emphasizes "choice" as a fundamental theme of the game. "The all-new original video game casts players as new mutant recruits in a rich, branching storyline that features a deep element of choice and gives players ultimate control of their destiny," says the official reveal.

"Choice" can be a difficult ingredient to bake into video games. Not to be too reductive, but this current console generation has mostly delivered linear, focused stories with rock-solid gameplay (Batman: Arkham Asylum, Uncharted 2, Modern Warfare 2) or compelling player agency with dubious combat mechanics (Alpha Protocol, Fallout 3, Mass Effect 1). Few games can pull off both. Even some titles that advertise their branching story lines, such as the thoroughly enjoyable Infamous for PlayStation 3, only offer binary "good or evil" choices, not a web of outcomes.
