And you thought Droid fever had subsided. Yesterday Verizon accidentally leaked details and a release date for the HTC-manufactured Droid Incredible, a new smartphone packing enough hardware to sink a fleet of iPhones. According to a few fleet-fingered bloggers, Verizon plastered a teaser of the Droid Incredible across its website on Tuesday afternoon, before eventually removing the information a few hours later.

The slip-up was enough to attract the attention of the tech world, and Google remains ablaze with searches for the HTC Droid Incredible. OK, we'll admit it: We're not totally sold on that name. It reminds us of the movie "The Incredibles." Still, the phone does sound pretty cool incredible. Over at Information Week, Eric Zeman runs through some of the pertinent stats, which include an eight megapixel camera:

The Droid Incredible will have a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor under the hood, accompanied by 576MB RAM/512MB ROM and 8GB of built-in internal storage. It will also have the same 3.7-inch AMOLED display, with 480×800 pixels. As with the Nexus One, the Incredible will run Android 2.1.

Let's get back to this eight-megapixel camera thing. Eight megapixels! As Zeman notes, eight megapixels would put the Droid Incredible in the same territory as a lot of very expensive handheld cameras. It would also far outstrip the three-megapixel camera on the Apple iPhone and the two-megapixel camera on the BlackBerry Bold. Remember, a high megapixel count isn't everything, but it's still an impressive figure for a phone.

The ad posted to the Verizon site showed a release date of Thursday, April 29 for the HTC Droid Incredible.

Of course, we've been through Droid mania before. In November, Verizon rolled out the Motorola Droid, which was advertised as a rival to Apple's best-selling smart phone. “iDon’t have a real keyboard. iDon’t run simultaneous apps. iDon’t take night shots. iDon’t allow open development,” reads the copy for an anti-iPhone ad. “iDon’t customize. iDon’t run widgets. iDon’t have interchangeable batteries. Everything iDon’t, Droid does.”

[Editor's note: The original version of this article misstated the release date. The HTC Droid Incredible will come out April 29.]
