While the CPSC determines which toys are safe, there are guidelines parents can follow to help ensure that the presents they give their children over the holidays will not cause harm. Parents should closely follow the assembly instructions that come with some products before allowing a child to play with them. It is always important to make sure that all parts of a product are in safe working order. Checking the product before presenting it to a child will give parents the opportunity to identify any obvious safety hazards.

Pay attention to the product’s label. Many labels prominently feature an age recommendation. These are very helpful for consumers who want to be sure that they are purchasing the right gifts for a particular child’s age group.

Nearly every homeowner has a collection of instruction manuals somewhere in the house. And it is inevitable that when you need the instruction manual, it will be hard to find. Maintaining and organizing a file of these instructions in a binder or filing cabinet will allow you to easily access contact information and directions for ordering replacement hardware.
