With big manufacturers of furniture and fiber-optic cable, Hickory has suffered from recession more than most metropolitan areas. It has the second-highest unemployment rate in North Carolina – 12.6 percent in November. Its foreclosure rate has more than doubled in a year, up 118 percent.
