Reader recommendation: Eisenhower, The White House Years
Monitor readers share their favorite book picks.
If you think that Eisenhower was a do-nothing president who spent all his time on the golf course, then you need to read Eisenhower: The White House Years, by Jim Newton. Newton’s chronology places Ike among the greatest American presidents of our time. He kept us out of wars during the turbulent late 1950s (including the temptation to send troops to Vietnam). And we have him to thank for the St. Lawrence Seaway and the Interstate Highway System.
