Sandra M. Gilbert’s husband died 15 years ago. Most of the poems in Aftermath, Gilbert’s ninth collection, are a response to that loss. (“Aftermath” is a pun; her husband was a mathematician.) These poems are personal and yet universal. Gilbert is also a coeditor of the Norton Anthology of women’s literature.
