City of Tranquil Light, by Bo Caldwell, is about two US missionaries in the North China Plain from 1906 to 1933. Chapters alternate between Katherine, who works as a nurse in the village, and her husband, Will, who serves God by offering sermons, food, and education. This historical fiction based on the lives of the author's grandparents is full of beautiful spiritual insights.
