I've just finished reading The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and enjoyed it thoroughly. It's set around the time of the end of World War II and describes the tribulations the island residents endured - but with humor. It reminds me of another favorite book of mine - "84 Charing Cross Road" by Helene Hanff.
