French Renaissance writer Michel de Montaigne is sometimes credited with being the father of the essay, as well as a philosopher who has influenced thinkers from Friedrich Nietzsche to Isaac Asimov. But the author-statesman was also a gifted practitioner of the art of the aphorism.
