Maraniss says that, according to genealogists who have studied Obama's family background, the president's lineage breaks down as follows: 50 percent Luo (the ethnic group in Kenya to which Barack Obama, Sr. belonged), 37.4 percent English, 4.4 percent German, 3.125 percent Irish, 3.125 percent Scottish, 1.56 percent Welsh, 0.195 percent Swiss, and 0.097 percent French.
