4. 'War Horse,' by Michael Morpurgo

Told from the point of view of a horse named Joey who is living in England as World War I breaks out, Morpurgo's book is a story of friendship. The bond between Joey and his owner Albert causes Albert to enlist in the army – underage – to try to find his horse when Joey's taken away to serve in battle. The novel's been adapted into a successful Broadway play and is now a movie. Age range: 9 to 12 years old.
