5. "Malcolm X," by Manning Marable

Manning Marable’s biography of Malcolm X, Malcolm X: A Live of Reinvention (Viking, 594 pp.), tells the story of a remarkable man who was by turns hustler, criminal, convict, convert, and finally, a martyr for his cause. Monitor reviewer Geoff Wisner praised this examination of the civil rights leader, which he says offers fresh material, helpful context, and evidence that Malcolm X “continued to grow and change until the end.” (CSMonitor.com, 4/26/11)
