4. Translations, by Brian Friel

Friel is one of Ireland's finest playwrights (a strong statement to make, given the competition in that category) and some consider "Translations" to be his finest play. The action takes place in 1833 in an Irish-speaking community in County Donegal, where British engineers are busy translating Irish place names into English. The scope of this play moves beyond Ireland to consider the tragedy of lost languages of all sort.
