Vote for the 5 best Dr. Seuss books

5. The Cat in the Hat

It's pretty hard not to love this rascal best of all. He's so very bad – and yet so wildly lovable too. Remember when Thing One and Thing Two start flying kites in the house? Every time I read this – and that was many, many times – I was convinced that the mess could NEVER be cleaned up before the return of the mother (who seemed considerably more scary than the Cat) and yet every time the children managed to somehow make that split-second ending come out just right. I will never, ever see a child in a striped stocking cap without thinking fondly of my childhood friend the wily Cat.
