Where personal income grew most, least

Americans in every US state saw their personal income grow in 2000. A Commerce Department study released last week credited last year's salary surge to the strength of high-tech manufacturing and business services in Pacific and New England States in particular. The top and bottom 10 states in percentage income growth:

Top 10:

1. Massachusetts 10.1%

2. Colorado 10.0

3. California 9.8

4. New Hampshire 9.2

5. Arizona, New Jersey 8.2

7. Virginia 8.1

8. North Carolina 7.8

9. Idaho 7.7

10. Minnesota 7.3

Bottom 10:

41. Indiana 5.3

42. Arkansas 5.0

43. Michigan 4.9

44. West Virginia 4.8

45. Kansas 4.7

46. Mississippi, Nebraska 4.3

48. Hawaii 4.1

49. Alabama 3.9

50. Louisiana 3.7
