The dog gets loose

February rain has uncovered

all the winter tracks,

etched out icy prints to reveal

bare patches, sodden ruts,

and the day warm enough

to delight my hound's nose -

crisscrossing the rich clues

he's working up

all the stories of winter -

three days will hardly be enough.
