News In Brief

SIGN OF THE TIMES Employees of Ohio's Cuyahoga County Library have been told not to show up for work anymore in sportswear bearing the logo of their beloved Cleveland Indians. The red-faced, grinning, Chief Wahoo it features is not the image the system ought to project, a memo says. The logo is often criticized as insensitive by native Americans and their supporters. At least one worker finds the ban unfair, complaining: "The library prides itself on not censoring."

WELL, NOW YOU KNOW

Researchers in Britain say they have discovered why men flip through magazines from back to front, while women do the opposite. Reason: Most newspapers put their sports coverage on or near the back pages, and males tend to go there first. Ergo, men are "virtually incapable" of reading anything from the front.

Environmental group lists most-threatened US parks

The National Parks and Conservation Association (NPCA) has chosen the US national parks it considers to be most under threat because of such factors as overdevelopment, pollution, misuse, abandonment, and vandalism. It released its list during a press conference called earlier this week by Sens. Bob Graham (D) of Florida and Harry Reid (D) of Nevada to unveil legislation designed to help preserve national parks by funding their upkeep from revenues generated by offshore-oil and natural-gas exploration. The NPCA's top 10 (in alphabetical order):

Chaco Culture National Historical Park, New Mexico

Denali National Park, Alaska

Everglades (Biscayne and Big Cypress areas), Florida

Gettysburg National Military Park, Pennsylvania

Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona

Great Smokey Mountains National Park, Tennessee, North Carolina

Haleakala National Park, Hawaii

Mojave National Preserve, California

Voyageurs National Park, Minnesota

Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho
