Waking in the City

It's autumn and time to close

the windows silencing the crows

who rose at dawn to shriek and caw.

Now it's the steam heat that goes

on, hissing, and something between purr

and roar whirrs down the street, slower,

slower, regardless of dark or hour,

devouring cans, groaning for more.
