WORTH NOTING ON TV

* THURSDAY

Peter and the Wolf: a Prokofiev Fantasy (A&E, 9-10 p.m.): Can you picture Sting narrating ``Peter and the Wolf''? It's by no means the strangest casting ever for Prokofiev's wonderfully entertaining orchestra story. William F. Buckley Jr. and Julia Childs, among others, have done so.

Besides Sting, this made-for-TV version involves 30 life-sized puppets and live actors from Thtre de Complicite in a souped-up theatrical production that has aired in several other countries but never before in North America.

The re-enactment of the Russian folk tale about the boy who disregards his grandfather's warnings about wolves stars 10-year-old Henry Feagins as Peter.

The show moves beyond ``Peter and the Wolf'' to offer other Prokofiev music, such as his not-so-classical ``Classical Symphony,'' the ``Overture on Hebrew Themes,'' and the ``March.'' Claudio Abbado is seen in person and as a puppet conducting the Chamber Orchestra of Europe.

* SATURDAY

Music in Movies `94 (ABC, 11:30 p.m.-1 a.m.): ``The Lion King'' may be a big hit as a film, but so is its soundtrack, which is high on the recording-industry charts. The same is true for the music from ``Reality Bites'' and ``Natural Born Killers.''

This late-night special, hosted by Duane Eddy (a rock-and-roll Hall of Famer) and Tawny Kitaen, salutes some of today's film music - and some not from films - with performances by name artists.

Renowned for his ``twang'' guitar, Eddy has music in three films this year (``Forrest Gump,'' ``Milk Money,'' and ``Natural Born Killers'') and opens the show with an original piece. Music from other films is featured in performances by rock, pop, and country artists, such as Gloria Estefan's version of ``Turn the Beat Around'' from ``The Specialist'' and ``Renegades, Rebels, and Rogues'' by Tracy Lawrence from ``Maverick.''
