WORTH NOTING ON TV

* TUESDAY

Larry King Live (CNN, 9-10:30 p.m., EDT): Currently the most visible Senate race is no doubt Virginia's four-way contest involving Democratic incumbent Chuck Robb, Republican challenger Oliver North, and two independents: Marshall Coleman and former governor Doug Wilder. They'll all be facing off in a debate on this special edition of the noted talk show.

Although formal debate rules will not be in effect, the candidates be given equal time, and the program will include the usual live call-ins.

P.O.V. (PBS, 10:30-11 p.m.): ``Memories of Tata,'' another example of this series' individualistic approach to filmmaking, explores a Nicaraguan-American family's oppressive and frightening memories of their late patriarch, Adam Morales, whom they called ``Tata.''

Filmmaker Sheldon Schiffer probes for both causes and solutions as he uses the medium to deal with his contradictary feelings about his grandfather. As a boy, Schiffer remembers getting toys and affection from him at his barbershop in Nicaragua.

But in the film, Adams's wife and two daughters describe a starkly different man, often violent and abusive, who lived by a code of machismo that imposed a duty of silence on the victimized women of the family. * WEDNESDAY

Wimbledon (NBC, 10 a.m.-noon, EDT): Men's quarterfinals from London's All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club.

America Tonight (CBS, 9-10 p.m.): What can communities and businesses do if tight local budgets force reductions in the size of local police departments, making security inadequate?

Besides taking a hard look at who is running the town - and what their prioritites are - these communities can hire private security firms. And increasingly, they're doing just that.

The trouble is - according to a segment in this edition of the program - that you can't always tell what you're getting. The ranks of private cops include criminals, says the program - just the people you don't want ``policing'' homes and businesses.
