Virginia Senator Robb Tosses Hat in Ring

By

UNITED States Sen. Charles Robb launched his reelection bid March 13 without mentioning the letter he sent supporters March 10 admitting past conduct - extramarital ``socializing'' and drug parties - ``not appropriate to a married man.''

Mr. Robb, with his wife, Lynda, kicked off his campaign for a second term in a Washington County courtroom.

``I'm running for reelection to fight for Virginia's future,'' said the former governor. His speech trumpeted his conservative stands on money matters, defense, and crime, and noted his support of abortion rights.

Robb, whose wife is the daughter of the late President Johnson, asked fellow Democrats in the March 10 letter to forgive him - noting his wife had.

Mrs. Robb deflected a question March 13 about the controversies, saying: ``I think Chuck said everything in the letter.''

Robb faces two little-known challengers in the June 14 primary. Iran-contra figure Oliver North and Reagan budget official James Miller III are vying for the GOP nomination, which will be decided at a June 4 convention.
