Gun-toting youths

The author of the editorial "Save the Children (and the Adults)," Feb. 10, correctly notes that there is no quick-fix solution to the "cheapening of life" which is "breeding among some youths," and that changing such a problem will take time.

However, the author then calls for specific measures of gun control, even though in the examples cited the young men lived in the two cities with the most restrictive gun licensing in the nation (areas virtually free of legally owned guns), were themselves too young to legally possess firearms, and did not use assault rifles.

Rasheem Smith waited days to regain face by exacting his revenge on policeman David Pitchon - this is hardly a crime of passion, either. David Chesler, Woburn, Mass.
