IN PRINT A leading source of event and club information is Model Railroader, printed in Waukesha, Wis., by Kalmbach Publishing Company, which puts out several magazines and numerous books on the hobby. ON TELEVISION Two television series of interest to novice and seasoned hobbyists are being distributed to PBS stations around the country. ``All About Trains'' is a how-to series that provides pointers for the full spectrum of skill levels. ``On Track'' targets a broader audience, appealing to railroad buffs as well as modelers. Check with local stations for scheduling plans.

AT TRACK-SIDE Among the larger permanent layouts open to the public are those at the San Diego Model Railroad Museum; Cypress Gardens in Florida; the Chattanooga Choo Choo complex in Tennessee; the Toy Train Collectors Association Museum in Strasburg, Pa.; the Train Barn in Kalamazoo, Mich.; the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago; Trainland USA in Colfax, Iowa; the Children's Museum in Indianapolis; the Train Gallery in Grants Pass, Ore., and the A&D Toy Train Village and Railway Museum in Middleboro, Mass. In addition, many clubs welcome visitors to view their layouts.
