Honduran islands to be used for rebel attacks against Nicaragua

The United States will establish bases for Nicaraguan contra rebels on strategically placed Honduran islands close to Nicaragua's Pacific and Caribbean coastlines, say Honduran officers and US military sources. The islands are El Tigre, less than a mile from the Honduran mainland and 12 miles from Nicaragua, and the two Swan Islands, 135 miles north of Honduras and about 175 miles from Nicaragua, the sources said.

El Tigre will be used as a supply base and a launching point for rebels attacks against Nicaraguan troops. The Swan Islands will be used as a supply depot. The islands have been used before in CIA covert operations: El Tigre in the 1983 mining of Nicaraguan harbors and the Swans in the 1961 ill-fated Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba.
