Indian state plans to sue Union Carbide for gas leak

The Indian state of Madhya Pradesh will file legal suits in India and in the United States against Union Carbide over the Dec. 3 gas leak at its plant here that killed about 2,500 people, a government spokesman said Sunday. He said the state government will file on behalf of itself, its employees, and others affected by the disaster.

Meanwhile in New York, an $80 billion class-action lawsuit was filed against Union Carbide in federal court Friday on behalf of 22 Indian citizens injured in the accident.
