News In Brief

Now French farmers block highways in price protest

Farmers blocked roads across France Monday with tractors, burning tires and straw, demanding higher European Community agricultural prices, and protesting cuts in milk production.

Farmers set up roadblocks in the north, east, southwest, and Paris regions, using tactics adopted by truck drivers during a week-long blockade of French roads last month.

In southeast France, 5,000 farmers marched through Lyons carrying placards denouncing French President Francois Mitterrand and British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.
