Government planes were misused, says report

Congressional investigators have found ''widespread waste and misuse'' of civilian aircraft by government officials, including transport of family members at federal expense, a House committee chairman said. Rep. Jack Brooks (D) of Texas based his charge on a report made by the General Accounting Office to his House Government Operations Committee.

The report said many flights by government aircraft are made to locations ''readily served more economically'' by commercial flights. The Coast Guard, Federal Aviation Administration, and NASA alone spent $3 million more than available commercial flights would have cost during the year.
