Italy's prime minister, Amintore Fanfani, has resigned, signaling the collapse of the country's 43rd postwar government. Fanfani bowed out when the Socialist Party quit the four-party coalition headed by the Christian Democrats, leaving him without a working majority. Parliament is likely to be dissolved, and early elections are expected in June, government officials said.
