Honduran leftists hijack jet; 14 Americans aboard

Three Leftist gunmen hijacked a Honduran commercial airliner with 48 people aboard Wednesday and a US Embassy spokesman said 14 Americans were reported among the hostages. A Tegucigalpa radio station reported two American journalists from NBC were among the hostages aboard the plane.

The plane, on a domestic flight from La Ceiba on the Caribbean Sea to the industrial city of San Pedro Sula, was diverted to the capital of Tegucigalpa, authorities said. The three hijackers identified themselves as members of a leftist group protesting the presence of American, Argentine, and Chilean military advisers in the Central American country.

The hijackers demanded an accounting of ''disappeared'' people and release of an unspecified number of political prisoners, authorities said.
