S. African black bishop ousted from a homeland

Bishop Desmond Tutu, general secretary of the South African Council of Churches, said he had been expelled from the black homeland of Venda for trying to visit churchmen detained without trial.

The black Anglican bishop, an outspoken opponentof South Africa's apartheid system, said he was expelled from Venda over the weekend after asking police if he could visit and pray with detainees.
