Pigeon in winter

A hush of warmth at noon in winter and a pigeon darts at a twig shed on the hard, cold ground. She weighs and tests it with her bill, carnelian eyes intent on something in the air, on shadow of a bough that soon will sing with sap and hold the secret of a nest safe in a crook of green and tender leaves.
