Escondido, Calif. — If balancing the budget is so vital, why not make the budget cuts at the top-end of the economic scale rather than from the penniless? Why not cut by 25 percent or more all salaries and allowances of federal officials and retirees who receive over $30,000 a year? This would entail some inconvenience but would be invaluable in balancing the budget and in creating a more equitable system of economic values.
And why not make similar changes in the private economy?
The savings from cuts in salaries and expense accounts would be enormous, and should lead to reductions in prices.
After those moves had helped increase production and employment we could trim many public assistance programs.
