Haig cancels Japan visit amid furor over A-ships

Secretary of State Alexander M. Haig Jr. cancelled a planned visit to Japan that would have landed him in the midst of a furor about the visit of nuclear-armed American warships to Japan. Both nations conceded the visit by Mr. Haig would be ill timed, but neither would say specifically who took the initiative to call off the visit, part of Haig's trip to Asia.

US State Department officials said the cancellation was due to timing and scheduling, denying that Haig was "disinvited" by his Japanese hosts because of the political prob lems.
