Writers, some producers agree to settle strike

Independent producers and writers agreed to settle a 20-day-old motion picture and television strike, but the union remained at odds with major producers. Gary Ellingsworth, chief negotiator of the Writers Guild of America, said that the agreement was "excellent" and that "we are very pleased." He said several important producers accepted "in principle" the guild's proposal for a set percentage of gross profits fr om pay-TV and home video markets after producers recoup certain costs.
