Weinberger to detail defense fund request

The administration will request an additional $38 billion for defense, including outlays for a new bomber and another nuclear carrier, as part of its plan to bolster military might, Pentagon sources say. They added the multifaceted proposal also seeks to put back into commission two battleships and an aircraft carrier, construct an additional nuclear submarine, and upgrade an Indian Ocean naval base.

Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger will present the upward revision of Jimmy Carter's defense askings for fiscal 1981 and 1982 to the Senate Armed Services Committee March 4. Favorable reac tion is anticipated from the Republican dominated panel.
