Vancouver, Wash. — Mt. St. Helen's erupted four times in 48 hours around the weekend, and more eruptions are likely. Clouds from the eruptions drifted southeast, but scientists did not expect a significant amount of ashfall. Saturday evening, observers spotted a new lava dome rising to replace one destroyed during the latest activity. The latest series of eruptions -- the sixth since the volcano stirred awake in March from a 123-year slumber -- was preceded by warnings from scientists who noted increased seismic activity in the mountain. The Forecast Service said 92 people were evacuated from the area.
