New York gets tough on unregistered handguns

A law touted as the nation's toughest handgun control measure went into effect in New York State Tuesday, promising a one-year jail term for most people caught carrying a loaded, unregistered handgun on the street.

Police agencies across the state continued to take in, with no questions asked, dozens of unregistered handguns surrendered during an amnesty period that began when the law was signed on June 13.

Stiffer gun controls had been sought by reformists for years, but it too six slayings of policemen in two months in New York City to spark action.
