100 years of care

Anyone who has a warm spot in his heart for the blue-suited Salvation Army lads and lasses ringing out good cheer and asking passersby to remember the needy at Christmastime will certainly want to join in saluting the Army on its 100th anniversary in the United States.

Since the Army was founded in London in 1865, its ranks have spread to 83 other countries. Its troops invaded the US in 1880, bringing their message of goodwill and hope first to New York's "forgotten men" on the Bowery. In the decades since, the Army has never allowed them and many other less fortunate individuals to go unforgotten. That's a 100-year record of Christian service worth tooting on any street corner.
