US hikers freed: Timeline of key events

The two US hikers remaining in Iranian custody, Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal, were released today after more than two years of detention. Here are the key points in their saga.

Feb. 6, 2011 – Trial begins

The trial of all three hikers begins in Iran, although Shourd does not return for the trial. At the time, the hikers’ lawyer said that he did not expect them to be sentenced to further jail time because they could only be charged with illegal entry, for which they had already served adequate time. However, the court pursued espionage charges against them as well. The trial came amid even higher than normal anti-American sentiment in the country, tied to US criticism of the nuclear program and the anniversary of the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
