US hikers freed: Timeline of key events

The two US hikers remaining in Iranian custody, Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal, were released today after more than two years of detention. Here are the key points in their saga.

Aug. 20, 2011 – Sentenced to eight years in prison

The three are sentenced to eight years in prison each – five for espionage and three for illegal entry and espionage. Shourd does not serve the sentence because she is in the US. The severity of the sentence took many by surprise. Some expected leniency – possibly even a pardon – in honor of the holy month of Ramadan. The conventional wisdom was that the hikers were being held longer in order to be used as bargaining chips.
